Testing Net Speeds

Posted in Computers and Internet on August 19, 2006 by Shane Williamson
One of the things that is frustrating about trying to find a good site for testing Broadband speeds is that they are mostly US centric.

I’ve just stumbled onto Speedtest.net that has links to international servers including one in Sydney. This helps greatly in tracking down if there are issues with international pipes.

Google’s personal webpages

Posted in Computers and Internet on February 27, 2006 by Shane Williamson
Steve Rubel notes that Google has now launched their Home Page service.

You can create a basic web page very quickly with their clean user interface. It only gives you 100Mb space, but that’s far better than a lot of other free sites and no forced advertising either.

Another great Googleisation!

Warning to those that wish to pursue this widescreen eye-candy machine as you must have a dual head DVI video card to drive the thing.

The Prejudice map – or how to use Google to make things up

Posted in Computers and Internet on January 16, 2006 by Shane Williamson

From the department of "I’ve too much time on my hands, so I’ll….." comes this little gem called the Prejudice Map. This map was created by doing context searches in Google for each of the countries displayed.

The Google search string used is this (with Germany as an example) = "germans are known for *"

It’s an interesting insight in how Google can become a dangerous source of biased information from a global context.

Google the next Amazon.com!?!?

Posted in Computers and Internet on December 16, 2005 by Shane Williamson
Google’s latest service is bringing the Internet beast closer to stomping on Amazon.com’s sacred turf.

Millions of cyber surfers use Amazon.com to search & research for books, CDs, DVDs and the such before either buying online or purchasing from one of those local bricks & mortar equivalent.

Google’s information retrieval dogma is becoming many things to many people. It’s been a library assistant for some time, but now it’s becoming more and more like a mega shopping centre or mall too.

Although this Google’s service does push users to Amazon’s stores for CD & DVD searches, what will happen as this changes people’s habits from going to Amazon first to using only Google?

Googlezon is a lot closer than we think.
