Mobile Journeys in Sydney – Part 2

February 3, 2005

Second half of the day here at the Sydney edition of the Mobile Journeys conference. Great presentation by Mark Pesce (inventor of VRML!), Lecturer Digital Media of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) about Mobile Digital Social Networks.

Some of Pesce’s comments….

  • a concept of “hyperpeople” where these individuals are producers, distributors & consumers all rolled into one.
  • That we need to change the way we view the word “networks” and instead of thinking of it as “connected identities”
  • Digital Social Networks are online sites like LinkedIn, Friendstar, Orkut, Livejournal that foster connected identities.

At one stage in the presentation someone in the audience tried to connect to his notebook via Bluetooth and he said “Oh, I’ve been Blue bitched!” 🙂

“Digital Social Networks are like sharks, if they stop collecting info they die”

A question that came out of the session was that of the disparate nature of the DSN online sites and inability for them to be connected. Pesce commented on that that would be a great idea for a new site to link them all together…….. hang on… isn’t that Blogging!?!?!?! Of course it is.

Blogging is a Digital Social Mesh Network in it’s own right. A group of connected identities.
