Surreal – advertising as emergency housing for earthquake victims
November 4, 2005
We-make-money-not-art has this link to a surreal photograph on SF Gate of temporary shelter for Earthquake victims in Pakistan.
Supposedly, officials have not been handing out tents sent to the area for the victims quick enough, so the locals are using whatever they can get their hands on.
Listening to the stars reveals a spooky secret
November 4, 2005
I’d read many years ago that scientists sometimes used acoustic systems to interpret data captured from space craft and transmitted back to Earth so they could "listen to the data" to perceive any possible patterns.
Eventually, with all the background noise out there, something interesting would jump out at them.
The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) in the USA have released some of the spookier sound files created from data captured from spacecraft for Halloween.
By far the weirdest are the radio emissions of Saturn’s auroras.
So, next time you are out walking on a peaceful warm clear night and gaze forlornly up into the silent stars above wondering if there is life out there, remember that the stars & planets are screaming to be heard.
Nokia’s N92, leading the charge with Mobile TV devices
November 3, 2005
There is some very impressive video footage over at I4U of a Nokia N92 that has DVB-H capability. The device is very nicely designed in the way that it rotates the screen for a widescreen view.
The user experience looks very impressive.
If this is what the 2nd generation of these devices looks like now, then by Christmas next year it’s going to be mind blowing.

- mobile TV features include watching time of up to four hours recording and 30 seconds replay.

Podcasting – the voice of communities great and small
November 2, 2005
One of the great things about Podcasting is that anyone can do it. You don’t need expensive equipment and more importantly you don’t need any special skill set or trumped up University degree.
Podcasting becomes the voice of the people that are reaching out to their communities, whether it’s hundred of thousands or just a few people.
The other thing that makes podcasting unique is that you can’t fail doing it.
The New York Times has a nice piece of journalism of some podcasters, great and small, and how they are making a difference with their creative works.
Oh, and if you are looking to find out what this Podcasting is all about, then head over to The Podcast Network that is run by two friends of mine, Mick Stanic & Cameron Reilly, and sample some of the podcastinations that prevail there.

Italians are doing it more than other Europeans
October 17, 2005
According to a the latest figures from ITU, Italy now has the largest mobile phone penetration rate in Europe.
The report claims that Italy has around 62.7M users with a penetration rate of 109.42 per 100 inhabitants. They are now second in the world to Hong Kong which has a penetration rate of 114.5%.
But there is some controversy over the numbers as some other countries, such as Luxembourg, claim Italians are double dipping by having multiple SIMS per device.

Unwired get’s lifesaving funds from Intel
October 13, 2005
Intel has invested AUS$37 Million into Australian based wireless broadband company Unwired. These much needed funds will allow the provider to expand to other Australian states.
Good to see some sizeable investment movement in this area locally. Good sign that there is strong expectation of renewed growth.
A different type of long tail discussion
October 13, 2005
I was sitting out the back this afternoon working on a consulting paper in this amazing Sydney spring weather we are having, when the dog started growling at something on the grass next door…..
I measured her to be just over 2m long……. oh and she’s completely harmless. It’s an Australian Diamond Python.
