Kodak digital cameras top selling in US for 2004
Whoa! Did I read this right on thewirelessweblog….. that Kodak, that film and photo printing company everyone said would be put out of business by the digital cameras revolution, is now the leading brand of digital cameras sold in the US!?!?!?
Kodak shipped 4.8M digital cameras to US retailers in 2004, 66% more than 2003.
Now thats shifting the ol’ paradigm…

GPS Tron anyone?
Who said playing mobile games can’t get you out and about with some healthy exercise……
Engadget has posted a great piece about GPS Tron. This version of the game plays in "augmented reality". The concept works on the bike came in the movie where you do not cross the other players path. Of course you could end up playing against someone in a car and if you’re on foot that’d suck… Very cool, but don’t cross the streams dude!
Mobile Journeys in Sydney – Part 2
Second half of the day here at the Sydney edition of the Mobile Journeys conference. Great presentation by Mark Pesce (inventor of VRML!), Lecturer Digital Media of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) about Mobile Digital Social Networks.
Some of Pesce’s comments….
- a concept of “hyperpeople” where these individuals are producers, distributors & consumers all rolled into one.
- That we need to change the way we view the word “networks” and instead of thinking of it as “connected identities”
- Digital Social Networks are online sites like LinkedIn, Friendstar, Orkut, Livejournal that foster connected identities.
At one stage in the presentation someone in the audience tried to connect to his notebook via Bluetooth and he said “Oh, I’ve been Blue bitched!” 🙂
“Digital Social Networks are like sharks, if they stop collecting info they die”
A question that came out of the session was that of the disparate nature of the DSN online sites and inability for them to be connected. Pesce commented on that that would be a great idea for a new site to link them all together…….. hang on… isn’t that Blogging!?!?!?! Of course it is.
Blogging is a Digital Social Mesh Network in it’s own right. A group of connected identities.

Presentation at Ericsson Developer Day (Australia)
Had a great day at the Ericsson Mobility World Developer Day yesterday, at which I gave a presentation on developing on 3G & some trends that are happening in the mobile markets. Even got a bit of nice press!
There was a great turn out and the other presentations were good value. Kudos to Cyrus Allen (i-Mode dude) from Telstra for his unbiased down to earth delivery.
Well done Ericsson for putting on another great Dev Day!
Skype to kill 3G!?!?!?
TheFeature has an article on Skype becoming the 3G killer….. I don’t think so Peggy-Anne….
At the moment voice is the large revenue earner for Telco’s. The trend is already moving toward non-voice services and with the high-speed bandwidth of 3G these services will increase rapidly.
Personally, I use a mobile phone because it is convenient & mobile.
In other words, I don’t need to think about where I have to be to make or receive a call.
Although there will be a minority who will want to find alternative ways to make a circuit-switched voice call, there will always be a majority who will use the device in a standard way.
Telco’s will still get data traffic no matter how you use the device, so even though we will see more of these voice data applications appear, we will always need a Telco’s pipes to deliver them conveniently & mobile.
Ring Tones the killer app!?!?!?
Unbelievable statistics reported in the NY Times, via thewirelessweblog about the worldwide sale of ringtones last year totalling US$4 Billion. Now that’s a killer app in anyone’s books…..
The Motorola A1000 that I own has the ability to turn any sound file into a ringtone. If this functionailty becomes main stream, will it have any impact.
